Tamils in India, Tamils and India
MONTHS have passed since the people of Tamil Nadu, India, awoke to the sorry state of their three million siblings across the sea in Tamileelam. Passionate agitations organised by all hues of society brought hopes of change. In practice, however, all the political might of 66 million people has summed up to zero. Protests have failed to change the genocidal course of action on which Sri Lanka is progressing. Here, we discuss the need for Tamil Nadu to take some critical decisions.
Broadly, in Tamil circles, there were three levels of assumptions on how India may respond to Tamil Nadu’s agitations. The hopeful wished for the country to enforce a ceasefire; the pragmatic expected an end to political, economic and military assistance to Sri Lanka; and the pessimistic counted on India not expanding its ties with the Sinhala state. Months later, there is no ceasefire, existing assistance continues and Indian involvement on the military front has increased several folds.
The only coup of countless days of protests was the arrival of aid addressed to the 300, 000 Tamils displaced in the Vanni mainland. Of them, food items and some utensils have been distributed, despite days of delays imposed by the Sinhala state. Garments, on the other hand, have taken white van rides of their own and have disappeared from the face of the earth. Here is a point to ponder: 66 million Tamils do not have what it takes to clothe their sisters who are separated only by a shallow sea.
Until recently, India’s support for Sri Lankan was limited to gifts of “defensive” equipments, provisions of “soft” loans and support at international institutions such as the UN Human Rights Commission. Collectively, India was helping the Sinhala state permanently occupy the Tamil Homeland and whitewash its crimes on the international arena. At times, this policy was justified as “unavoidable”, owing to the need to keep another regional power, i.e. China, out of “India’s backyard”.
As we highlighted in November (Fading Gloss), the Sinhala community is heavily entrenched in anti-Indian rhetoric. The terrorist attacks on Mumbai showed how an attempt to gloss over deep-rooted historic grudge with surface level cooperation can end up as a futile exercise. Yet, in recent weeks, India’s Central Government has increased its support for Sri Lanka. Widespread reports indicate direct involvement of Indian experts in land, sea and air operations of the Sri Lankan military.
In Vanni, where direct military confrontations are taking place, each week, a dozen civilians are killed, and hundreds more are injured by Sri Lankan air raids and artillery fire. In the east of the island, which is under the occupation of the Sinhala military, tens of Tamils are made to disappear or are killed each week, according to a recent report from the UN. Thus far, instead of pressurising the Sinhala state to stop, India has been actively involved in justifying these crimes against humanity.
Sadly, there are elements in Tamil Nadu who would rather engage in “எட்டாப் பழம் புளிக்கும்“ than admit to the glaring truth that they are unable to influence Indian Central Government policy. These individuals seek to justify Indian actions by referring to the, now infamous, Rajiv Gandhi incident. In actual fact, for four years from 1987, the Rajiv administration had a bad stint with Tamil militancy. Mr Gandhi was the last in more than 5, 000 lives, mostly civilian, lost during that period.
People of Tamileelam look up to Tamil Nadu as their saviour. Sadly, the Congress administration in New Delhi appears keener to project Tamils as “clowns” than equal contributors to India. In practice, also, political agitations have been unable to change ground realities. However, given geographic proximity, economic might and intellectual advancement, Tamil Nadu can take practical initiatives to assist in the Tamileelam struggle. All that is needed now is a bit of soul searching.

Peter, as far as things go now its a waiting game. Tamilnadu will help propel the BJP cum ADMK to power and when Indian government changes expect Sri lanka to split.
2. you know who. | January 12, 2009 at 2:06 pm
I do not belive the BJB is going come back to power. Its going to be very close call in the comming Indian election. Its long time to go as well. Unless this TN patys some how pulls the plug out of central govenement. we will have long waiting game.
Somthing have to halt this offencive of SLA, they are begining to

The CPI has already shown its support for the eelam homeland. Its not going to be a coalition of bjp going with parties before the general election. Its going to be an allinance once the poll resullts are out that counts. Tamilnadu will factor in then. The trimugalam vote is very much a state level and extreme money distribution excercise for alaghri to attempt to stake his claim to the CM post. However tamilnadu people have voted differently in the state and parlimentry election simply because they want the affairs dealt differently at the state and federal level.
Admk will take a resonable swipe at the parlimentary level with the cpi/cpm. The bjp will sweep in the north and the so called third front will collude with the bjp to form the next government. If the communist do increase their margin, the left supported national government may not need the BJP. This will also be favourable.
All indicators are that congress will be wiped at the polls.

Straw i feel sad for you. Sri Lanka is bankrupt. In this comming period of massive retrenchments in the middle east, the loss of blood money from those who really save the Sri Lankan economy will be gone. Guess what as a heavily debted nation and a low S&P rating, deflation will put the nail in the coffin for Sri Lanka.
If the LTTE attacks then whenever it maybe then it will cause the collapse and rebellion in the armed forces. Why do you think the LTTE pulled back. As Peter said earlier the LTTE had to defend streches of the A9 as much as losing troops for further operation. Now with long range artilery the A9 is still not usable. Thats called force multiplier.
There is a reason its called the final war. The reason simply because this time round it should not be just a victory in the battlefield but also in the geo poltical arena. This will come as things are begining to align in the US and India towards that.

As Defencenet,Defencewire and EllanForce have desperately tried and failed miserabily to try to break the spirit of the tamils they have failed. You can try to break bones but you will never break the spirit. Some posers as tamils are trying their level best to play turn coat now to try to say the LTTE is splitting or that they are not haooy with the organisation. However sadly they are still failing miserabily.
Even the SLA supporters go to tamilnet read it and come back to these blogs and called it tamilnut. If these so called blogs are the truths and not the front then why do they still read tamilnet. Obiviously they themselves realise then when independent and geninue media gets killed in Sri lanka, yet these blogs still go on to report the battlefeild news that they are nothing more then inteligence agencies trying to supplement the official government propaganda machine with something which looks more believable. Yet they have failed.
I have always professed some geninue respect for Sri Lankan people. I do so because ther was,is and will be good people among them. The Sunday Leader is one such person. Unfortunately they get shot down and the goodness is killed. People of Eelam and Sri Lanka must learn to be amicable like Malaysians and Singaporeans and not like India and Pakistan. After all at the end of the day both sides of the island just want the peace and a seperation will be best to achieve it.

Everyday dozens of SLA are killed and burried in Eelam as “LTTE members” and reported as “deserted”. This is very pathetic as some of them are even very young recruits. It is onething to die defending your country and completely different thing to die in a strange land filled with uncertainities. Who knows , probably only dogs pee on where the SLA men are buriedin Eelam. If LTTE knew the spot where they were buried, they would definitely guard and respect it. But it looks like SLA does it, leaving no indication of the spot. The guys in SLA who are actually doing the fighting are tired folks. They are out there with no sleep and see the whole exercise as punishment. Poor chaps.
US administration is changing next week. and the administration of “Change” under Obama is coming.
We can call this as a century for the oppressed , by the oppressed and of the oppressed. Bush triggered it all being in the enemy camp.

Hay you fools try to put out the fires in your own backyard before poking into other peoples bussiness. Prabakaran will be history together with his day dream in da near future.
Dont talk about the social ratings in Sri Lanka if you realy dont know about them.
10. Dhanu | January 18, 2009 at 3:30 pm
It’s kind of funny to see how y’all are in DENIAL that the LTTE is on the brink of EXTINCTION as you & I know it.
Navindran talks about “change” soon in the US. Well…. they have much MUCH bigger problems to worry about such as an economy that’s more than lackluster & 2 unpopular wars. So if you think this LTTE issue is going to be his top priority, not only you’re stupid but also quite a HOPELESS-ROMANTIC.
I just heard that LTTE plans to tactically withdraw to the sea to preserve their cadres..lol Also, they’ll be setting up shop in Southern India to see if they can break a piece of INDIA since obviously, Sri Lanka didn’t work out.
Prabhakaran these days changes his underwear depending on how many times SLAF flies over his rat-hole. Why is a growling tiger in a hole deep underground like a RAT??? Aren’t tigers land animals???

@Dhanu
Do you know which is more easier ? Separatism or Holding together ?
To hold it all together you need to pump money and keep pumping money. Once you do not have money, it automatically breaks down.
It is just a matter of time before Lanka breaks down. We have to admit your military progressed. Foenska and Rajapaksa are shitting in their pants every minute as they know their days are numbered.
Hahaha ! Just remember me when that happens.

LTTE will become extinct only when Eelam becomes extinct.
Eelam will become extinct only when Tamil becomes extinct.
If Tamil goes extinct, it means Lanka was perished a million eons before that.

By inappropriate you mean, comments directed at pointing out why the LTTE is not the sole representative or why they continue to assassinate anyone who disagrees with them even if they’re Tamil?
Please Clarify. Thanks for the opportunity to express my views.

Peter,
The problem in Tamilnadu today is that the common man, leave out the Vaiko’s,Thiruma’s etc,see this issue with a different mindset post 21-May-1991.
To you,the life lost on 21st May might have been the last of 5000.But for Tamilnadu and for people in India, along with that particular life, also went a visionary who had a lot of dreams for India and who, many of us stoutly believe, would have led India to greater heights.
So post 21st May,in our eyes,we have two issues.
1>Srilankan Tamils
2>LTTE
Unfortunately, these both go together. So dont expect any major shakedown in TN.Even the so called indefinite fast fizzled out and had to be called off.
Sympathy for the lakhs of Srilankan tamils is always there. But until this war with the LTTE meets its logical end,all we can offer is only sympathy.
In my opinion, all dreams of a separate Eelam evaporated along with the 21 lives lost on that cruel day at Sriperumputhur.
